“If I can capture

in my art

Some of the

grace and vitality

of my subject,

Then

I have succeeded.”

Artist Statement

I create life sized ‘direct-metal’ sculptures of wildlife and large contemporary forms. I work in a wide variety of styles ranging from impressionistic to realistic to contemporary. Bronze and stainless steel are my usual mediums of choice, because of their ‘permanence’ and the rich colour variations possible in bronze patina.

“I enjoy the challenge of working with metal, the heating and shaping of a flat piece of bronze into a form of beauty.”

Much of my childhood was spent outdoors, as we lived in the veld of South Africa and Botswana. First hand encounters with African wildlife including snakes and leopards, gave me a respect for and an affinity with wildlife that often influences my choice of subject.
As a young man, I met the sculptor Mechelle Fleischer. It struck such a chord, that I immediately knew that I needed to become a sculptor one day. After a short 5 year naval career, I became a professional yacht captain. Years of living in close contact with the ocean, instilled a special love for anything related to the sea. The choice of marine subjects for my sculptures reflects a yearning to return to that natural life.
I have no formal art training, but have a [passion and desire to create. The American sculptor Duncan Mc Kiernan encouraged my development in the art of patinas.

“There is no casting involved in my art. I prefer to use sections of sheet bronze, each piece hand wrought over an anvil, a cedar block or even gently
over a knee, to form the muscles or curves for the idea in mind.
This method ensures that each sculpture is completely
original and unique.”

A professional artist since 1994, I have had the opportunity to sell my sculptures internationally to parks and private and corporate collectors. I also have public sculptures in numerous cities in the United States. I live with my wife and children in Dorset, UK.
